Minutes to decimal, explained

Decimal hours express time as a single number instead of hours and minutes. The conversion is one step: minutes divided by 60. There are 60 minutes in an hour, so 30 minutes is 30/60 = 0.5 of an hour, and 45 minutes is 0.75. To convert a full time, keep the whole hours and add the minute fraction: 8 hours 15 minutes is 8 + 15/60 = 8.25.

Going back is the mirror image: multiply the decimal part by 60. In 6.5 hours, the 0.5 becomes 0.5 × 60 = 30 minutes, so 6.5 is 6:30. In 2.25 hours, 0.25 × 60 = 15 minutes, giving 2:15.

The four you should memorize: 15 min = 0.25 · 30 min = 0.5 · 45 min = 0.75 · 60 min = 1.0. Everything else falls between these.

Why some conversions look messy

Not every minute lands on a clean decimal. Ten minutes is 0.1667 and 25 minutes is 0.4167, because they do not divide evenly into 60. Payroll systems round decimal hours to two places, so you will usually see 0.17 and 0.42. The chart below and the full conversion chart show these rounded values.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 15/60 = 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.5, and 45 minutes is 0.75. For a whole time like 8 hours 20 minutes, keep the hours and add 20/60, giving 8.33 hours.

What is 8:30 in decimal hours?

8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5 decimal hours, because 30 minutes is half of an hour. Enter 8:30 in the converter and it returns 8.5 instantly.

How do I turn decimal hours back into hours and minutes?

Multiply the decimal part by 60. For 8.75 hours, 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes, so 8.75 hours is 8:45. The converter does this for you in the decimal box.

Why does payroll use decimal hours instead of minutes?

Pay is hours multiplied by a rate, and that multiplication only works cleanly with decimal hours. You cannot multiply 8:30 by an hourly rate, but you can multiply 8.5.

Do the decimals ever repeat?

Yes. Ten minutes is 0.1667 and twenty is 0.3333, which never end exactly. Payroll usually rounds decimal hours to two places, which is why the chart shows a rounded value.
